Elderbridge Agency on aging
By Maxine Christensen
The Elderbridge Nutrition Staff, together with the Staff and Volunteers of the Exira meal site, have a program in use during bad weather.
For the last few winters, they have had an average of five days when it wasn’t safe for the volunteer drivers to get to the site’s kitchen and then drive around the county delivering meals. This last year has been especially bad with meal site closure due to both winter and summer storms.
Elderbridge mounted a campaign to raise funds to provide a care package containing five shelf-stable meals to sustain residents during severe winter storms. There are five meals in the pack.
The meals are intended to be eaten when the meal site is closed due to bad weather. If the participants have not needed to use the meals by the end of April, they are welcome to eat them at any other meal time.
Each of the meals contain the necessary one third daily nutrients normally provided in the hot meals. In addition, it has been specially prepared to have less than 885 mg of sodium per meal. The package includes several different menus
If the electricity has gone off, all of the food is safe to be eaten unheated, although some may taste better heated if power is available to do so.
