Olnes named Cass County Wellness Coordinator

Published: Friday, November 21, 2008 9:21 AM CST
The Cass County Board of Health is pleased to announce Cass County’s new Wellness Coordinator, Mary Olnes. The Board of Health will subcontract with the Nishna valley Family YMCA for Mary’s employment.

In September, the Board of Health announced it has received $103,891 in funding to improve the health of Cass County residents. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Harkin Wellness Grant program, and the Iowa State legislature’s support of local health initiatives.

Olnes will coordinate a variety of efforts to reduce the prevalence of obesity in Cass County residents. A community health survey will be conducted this fall and again in the spring of 2010. She will also be working with groups within the county to implement wellness initiatives designed to reduce obesity and chronic disease.

After teaching vocal music for two years at Atlantic High School, Olnes is excited to return to Atlantic to pursue another passion-health and fitness. Originally from Yankton, SD and receiving her degree from Concordia College, making a home in Iowa proved to be a positive transition and Atlantic proved to be a welcoming community. While living and teaching in Atlantic, Olnes had the opportunity to serve as a Wellness Coach and work in customer service at the Nishna Valley Family YMCA. She also received her certification in Les Mills group fitness in Body Attack and Body Pump. “Encouraging physical activity and healthy choices is a worthy and essential pursuit,” Olnes said. “I’m a firm believer that when a person is truly well, body and spirit, ultimately our vocations, families, and communities will reap the benefits of our good health. I’m thrilled to be back.”
