Griswold News

Griswold Optimist Club met Friday, Nov. 7 with 24 members present for the breakfast meeting, including new members Jim and Ann Swisher, who joined this Friday. Fred Hildebrandt conducted the meeting, with Ray Wilson giving the invocation. Quotes for the day were given by Randall Baier, Raymond Cousins and Bobby Jurchen.

Raymond and Norma Lee Cousins were in charge of the program. Raymond conducted a test, asking 32 of the many questions that immigrants must pass before becoming citizens of the Unites States. Examples: 1. How many stars are on the flag? (50), 2. What do the stars represent? (the 50 states), 3. How many stripes are on the flag? (13), 4. What do the stripes represent? (the colonies). 5. Name the three branches of government. (Legislature, Judicial and Executive), 6. How many senators are in the U.S. Congress? (100), 7. Name the two senators from Iowa. (Harkin and Grassley), 8. What is the term of office for senators? (six years), 9. Who takes over if both present and vice-president die? (Speaker of the House), 10. Name a country that we battled in World War II. (Italy, Germany and Japan), 11. Who was the writer of the Declaration of Independence? (Thomas Jefferson).

Members will put up the flags at both the Pleasant Township and Flint cemeteries on Nov. 11, at 8 a.m. and take them down at 4:30 p.m.

Dick Nichols will have the program on Nov. 14 and Raymond Cousins will receive the free breakfast.

UM Morning Circle

United Methodist Morning Circle met Thursday, Nov. 6 with Helen Brown presiding. Eight members answered roll call with pantry item for Lord’s Cupboard and an unexpected blessing.


Lois Carlisle gave devotions with readings, “Holy Alphabet,” “Thou Knowest That I’m Growing Old” prayer and “I Wish.” Jeanette Bergstrom gave her treasurer’s report. It was decided to give a donation to the Rainbow Covenant. Members were reminded to bring mittens for me mitten tree in the church entry.

It was voted to hold over the same officers for another year, which are President, Geneva Smith; Vice-president, Helen Brown; Secretary, Dorothy Putnam, with Karen Krisinger as alternate and Treasurer, Jeanette Bergstrom.

Hostesses were Carolyn Lukehart and Karen Krisinger.

Chapter GL P.E.O.

Chapter GL of P.E.O. Sisterhood met Saturday, Nov. 8 at the home of Kimberly Shield with 15 members present. A new member was initiated. Lunch was served by Donna Blair.

CCC Ladies Circle

Central Church of Christ Ladies Circle met Thursday, Nov. 6 with 12 members present. Shirley Whiley opened the meeting with the poem “Gratitude.” Roll call was answered with “What I like best about the holidays.” A monetary donation will be made to Open Door Missions.

Bea Albright gave devotions on “Faith,” reading three different articles “Do Something,” “The Day I Became a Neighbor” and “What Think Thee of Christ?” Bea Albright and Belma Dorsheimer were appointed to the nominating committee. Lunch was service by Annabel Brandt.

Following the meeting, fruit plates were delivered to shut-ins. Deaconnesses for the month of November are Annabel Brandt and Sheryl Buroughs.

Randall and Phyllis Baier spent the weekend at the home of their son, Kelly and Shelly Baier at Cedar Rapids. Enroute to Cedar Rapids Friday evening they stopped at Williamsburg, where they met their son, Arnold Baier of North English for supper at the Landmark Cafe. On Saturday, Randall and Kelly attended the National Toy Show at Dyersville, while Kristi Keast of Mt. Vernon and Phyllis and Shelly attended a craft show at Cedar Rapids. On Sunday, Randall and Phyllis, Kelly and Shelly, Kristi and Craig Keast of Mt. Vemon and Eliza and David Easker of Iowa City gathered for a family dinner at Perkins Cedar-Rapids.

Esther Frazier attended church services at Oakland on Sunday with Mick and Judy Guttau of Treynor, along with other relatives. John Pritiken was the speaker, accompanied by his wife and daughter from California. Following the services there was a family dinner at Mick and Judy’s to celebrate several birthdays. Guests were Esther Frazier of Griswold; Dave and Linda Danker, Arlyn and Lois Danker, Chad, Julie, Gallic and Ryan Danker and Heidi, Brock, Blake and Emmersen Fox, all of Minden; Ethel Guttau, Josh and Shelly Guttau, Joslyn and Dane, Gary and Dee Guttau, Don, Lisa and Jennifer Hatfield, Darci Eitmann and Jamie Jacobson, all of Treynor and Scott and Shannon Simpson and daughter of Council Bluffs.
