Atlantic girls team moving on, boys team done for season

ATLANTIC— Things went about as well as the Trojanns could have hoped for at Thursday night’s district meet at Nishna Hills in Atlantic.

Two straight days of rain departed early in the day, leaving the course soggy, but far more manageable than at a few other locations around the state.

And perhaps most importantly, Atlantic freshman Ali Krogman notched an individual district championship (the Trojanns’ second in as many years) while the rest of the team did their part, placing all five runners in the top 30 to take second behind Harlan in the team standings and clinch their first team trip to the state meet in Fort Dodge in several years.

Many thought it was a foregone conclusion that No. 10 ranked Atlantic would advance beyond this district meeting, perhaps even challenge No. 4 Harlan for a district championship.

That didn’t quite happen, Harlan, placed all five of their top runners in the top 15, and finished about 23 points ahead of the runners up from Atlantic. But the Trojanns are in none-the-less, and will take their show on the road to next weekend’s state meet in Fort Dodge.

“You think about this (happening) but sometimes it’s dangerous to assume,” Atlantic cross-country coach Bruce Henderson said afterwards. “It’s nice to be officially in with a second place (finish).”

Krogman, to nobody’s surprise, ran away with another individual title to notch her first district championship and win her fifth race of the season, her third straight.

Two weeks ago on the same course, Krogman shifted into gear in the race’s final 300 yards or so to defeat Tri-Center’s Ashley Corrin to win the Trojanns Invite and followed that up with last week’s Hawkeye 10 Conference championship in Denison.

Thursday night, she secured the pure hat trick; three straight wins in succession to strengthen a young career that continues to grow at a tremendous rate.

When Krogman did cross the finish line Thursday, she was more than a couple hundred yards ahead of the next wave. Her time of 15:44 trumps runner up Erin Sawyers from Winterset by 26 seconds.

“We thought coming in that she was really the class of the field,” Henderson said of Krogman. “Today, she really looked good.”

The Trojanns team failed to place another runner in the top 10 to qualify another individual on their own merit, but ran well as a pack and placed their next three runners all coming in the top 20.

Palmer Hoegh, the team’s No. 2, placed 14th overall at 16:46, and was followed by Kaley Stender (No. 18 – 16:52) and Amanda Gude (No. 19 – 16:53).

“There was a lot of pressure and we had some people respond really well to that,” Henderson said. “Kaley Stender at 18 and Amanda Gude at 19…we didn’t think we’d have four in the Top 20, so that was a plus.”

In the boys’ race, Atlantic’s top finisher was Tyler VonSeggern (No. 20 – 18:21), but his effort was 10 places and about 30 seconds short of individual qualification.

Winterset’s Evan Selsor (No. 1 – 16:38) placed first by about 11 seconds over Glenwood’s Johnny Fuller while Winterset teammate Matt Callahan placed third (No. 3 -16:54).
