Atlantic not following cell phone trend

ATLANTIC – After nearly 10 years of trying to keep the use of cellular phones out of schools, officials are beginning to realize they are fighting a losing battle. According to a recent article in the Des Moines Register, some schools are beginning to relax their cell phone policies and are even looking at ways to utilize cell phone technology as a learning tool.
According to the article, certain schools are beginning to allow students to use their cell phones at lunch and between classes, and even during class in certain circumstances.
While some schools are relaxing their policies, Atlantic hasn’t revised the phone policy and probably won’t be any time soon.
According to Superintendent Wendy Prigge, students are asked to leave their phones in their lockers during school hours and not even have them in the classroom. Phones are allowed in after school activities and on activity trips so students can communicate with their parents.
The Atlantic High School Student Handbook states that the use of any electronic device, including cell phones, during school hours, is strictly prohibited because the devices may cause “disruptions and distractions to the learning environment.”
The policy states, in part, that cell phone use in rest room or locker room areas is prohibited because many phones have photography and video capability.
When a student is caught using a cell phone during school hours, the phone will be confiscated and for the first offence, returned to the student at the end of the school day. After the second offense, the phone will be returned to the student’s parent or guardian, and with a third offense and any after, the student faces one day of in-school suspension.
