RED OAK— The Trojanns placed two runners in the top five and had another finish 11th overall as Atlantic glided to a third-place finish Monday evening at Red Oak Country Club.
It was traditional powerhouse Harlan edging out a talented St. Albert squad for the team championship, finishing four points ahead of the Saintes 44 points to 48. Atlantic, with 73, was third followed distantly by Griswold’s four-place finish (120 points) in the 14-team field.
“Third place was a realistic finish for us,” Atlantic coach Bruce Henderson said. “Though, we would have liked to have been a little closer to St. Albert.”
Atlantic freshman Ali Krogman was the top runner for the Trojanns, placing third overall with a time of 17:08 and two-time state qualifier Kaley Stender, a senior, was two places behind, earning a top-five finish at 17:38.
Both runners performed about as well as last week’s run at Clarinda, Krogman placing the same while Stender moved up one placing after shaving 33 seconds off her previous time.
Junior Palmer Hoegh, a letter-winner in ’06, was 11th overall in the field of 74 runners, trimming 17 seconds off her time at Clarinda to clock in at 17:51 Monday in Red Oak.
“Our top three runners looked really good,” Henderson said. “Palmer Hoegh finished within a minute of Ali and Kaley and really competed well.”
Freshman Amanda Gude cracked the top 25 after placing 22nd overall with a time of 18:51 and Michelle Buboltz also figured into the team scoring at No. 32 with a time of 19:30.
The JV Trojanns had eight runners finish in the top 20, led by Sarah Rohde’s time of 19:56 that earned her sixth overall in the junior varsity race.

The Trojanns were without their top runner Monday as Myles Hetrick was held out in Red Oak, but were still able to place fourth in the 13-team meet.
Senior Tyler VonSeggern was the Trojans top runner on this day, placing 13th overall with a time of 19 minutes flat. That performance was a 28 second improvement from Clarinda’s race last week, a feat that moved the senior up six places.
Junior Taylor Edelman finished 24th overall with a time of 20:05 and two more Trojans; Austin Coder (No. 27 – 20:17) and Derek VonSeggern (No. 29 – 20:21) enjoyed top 30 finishes as well.
Frank Saddlemire was five seconds and two places behind Derek VonSeggern and Will Cord finished 34th with a time if 20:40.
“We were missing Myles, but came up with some good effort in getting fourth in a 13-team meet,” Henderson said. “Tyler VonSeggern and Austin Coder possibly ran the best races of their careers, while Taylor Edelman had a solid race and Derek VonSeggern did a great job in his first varsity race.”
The Trojans JV was led by Delsin Arnold’s second place finish (20:28) in the junior varsity race while Cody Mudd enjoyed a top ten finish as well, placing eighth overall with a time of 21:36.
The teams will resume action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in Carroll.
