Griswold boys take individual and team titles at Clarinda Coed Meet

Jamie Meek set the pace for the Griswold Tigers at the Clarinda Invitational Cross County by claiming first place in 16:54. Meek, a junior led the race from the beginning finishing 11 seconds ahead of Council Bluffs TJ’s outstanding runner, Kyle Blue. Last year, Meek claimed 4th at the meet with a time of 18:29. The Tigers were able to claim the team title be placing all five of their scorers in the top 25.

Seniors Jared Hoffman and Austan Haynes both turned in impressive performances with 7th and 8th place finishes in times of 17:48 and 18:09. Both of the runners took over a minute off of their times from the previous year. Josh Ridlen, a sophomore, made his cross-country debut with an impressive 16th place finish in 18:49. Anthony Drogo rounded out the scoring with a 22nd place finish and a time of 19:04. Daniel Wyman finished in 48th and Dylan Newell took 61st. 

“Every one of our boys finished their races tonight. It was their superb performances in the last 400 meters that allowed us to edge out a very strong Gretna team” according to Coach Jane Hall Chaillie. “The competition for varsity spots is also a plus.” Cameron Ward who wasn’t able to run last season because of an injury ran a strong junior varsity race to finish 20th.

Griswold won the meet with 54 points. Gretna was close behind with 63 points. Maryville took 3rd with 83 followed by Harlan with 100 and Council Bluffs TJ with 103. Other teams included: 6th-Atlantic, 170; 7th Nebraska, 189; 8th Corning, 203; 9th Red Oak, 257; 10th Shen/Essex, 267; and 11th Clarinda, 357.

Lauren Moore led the way for the Lady Tigers. Moore finished the race in 17 minutes flat to place 5th. Moore, only a sophomore, ran 2 minutes faster than last year and moved up 5 places. The Lady Tigers claimed 4th place in an extremely tough field. Brandi Freund finished 11th with a time of 17:21; Mandy Nicklaus took 20th with 17:58; Emma Maass ran 28th in 18:39 and Brittan Haynes claimed 56th in a time of 20:49. Rounding out the varsity squad for the girls were Lauren Fast and Taylor Watson.

“The girls all shaved major times off their times for last year on the same course. They are just going to keep getting better running against top notch teams”, a pleased Coach Hall Chaillie shared after the race.


The Lady Tigers finished in fourth place with 120 behind cross-country powerhouses Harlan-55; Gretna,58; and Atlantic 76. Other teams included: 5th Council Bluffs TJ, 146; 6th Glenwood, 183; 7th Shen/Essex, 208; 8th Clarinda, 236; 9th Corning, 256; and 10th Bedford, 316.

Griswold also claimed the first place medals in both the middle school girls and boys races. Allison Young topped the girls’ 2 mile division with a time of 12:04. John Mark Topham ran away with the boys’ middle school race by running a 10:38, over a minute faster than the next competitor.
