ATLANTIC— The Trojanns’ bid to solidify themselves as a contender in the Hawkeye 10 played out plenty well Tuesday evening at AHS, sweeping traditional conference powerhouse Red Oak in three games to kick off their 2008 season 2-0.
Atlantic strung together a 10-0 run early in game one and was on its way to decisive victory in the first two games before suppressing a late-response from Red Oak in game three, squashing the Tigers’ bid to prolong the match and wrapping things up nicely with a 3-0 sweep that took just over an hour to complete.
“It was just a little chaotic in game three, I don’t think we were as organized as we could have been,” Atlantic coach Lori Lammers said afterwards. “The important thing though was when we got down, we didn’t stay down, and we fought our way back into it.”
Service errors slowed the Trojanns at times during the second game and at several key times in the third, but a sturdy defensive effort proved unyielding and steadily crushed any attempt from Red Oak to rip off a much-needed run.
“When you’re not real big, that becomes important,” Lammers said of the defensive proficiency on this night.
The victory was marked by strong communication and a floor that proved to work within each unit’s role. Defense led to offense, and the Trojanns were able to play with a patience to run their brand of volleyball, not allowing any minor Red Oak run to force them outside of their task.
Executing their game plan—not to perfection—but more than good enough just to beat Red Oak, Lammers is satisfied with this one.
“There were some times when we broke down and that was us trying to force it,” she said. “But for the most part, we played within ourselves. We slowed it down when we needed to, and we ran a quicker offense when we had to.”
Up next for the team is Saturday’s Trojanns Volleyball Tournament at AHS. The annual invitational tournament will bring in stiff competition this year, led at the front by No. 7 ranked Winterset and No. 10 rated Harlan.
Along with talented squads Council Bluffs St. Albert, Underwood and Tri-Center, the Trojanns don’t expect to led either of the Top 10 teams walk away untested.
“It’s a tough field…very competitive,” Lammers said. “This was a good victory that hopefully serves as a spring board because we’re going to see some very good teams Saturday.”
