Senior Kasey Swinnerton notches 12 spikes and17 digs in Atlantic victory
Staff Report
CLARINDA— The Trojanns had a hiccup in game two Thursday evening when a passing breakdown afforded Clarinda to seize a 25-23 victory. But unfortunately for the host Cardinals, that’s the only inch Atlantic would allow, the Trojanns knocking down Clarinda 3-1 to start the season off 1-0.
“We played a good first match,” Trojanns coach Lori Lammers said. “We did a great job of being offensive from the service line which took Clarinda out of system often throughout the match.”
Atlantic took the first game 25-20, dropped the second before rallying to take the second and third games 25-20 and 25-17, fueled by an improved passing effort.
Seemingly everyone had a hand in this victory as the Trojanns proved a well-oiled machine in the efficient victory.
Anna Wernimont and Kasey Swinnerton each led the team with 12 spikes apiece while Wernimont went 25-for-28 from the serving line with 4 aces and notched 12 digs.
Swinnerton went 6-for-8 serving and recording a team high 17 digs on the night.
Erin Westering and Katie Pappas both provided stout defense and offensive production from the service line, Westering notching 6 digs while going 26-of-28 with three aces and a team-high 39 assists. Pappas, the team’s libero, recorded 11 digs and went 23-of-26 from the line with 4 aces.
Pappas, who played her first match at a new position, fit in well, says Lammers.
“Katie did an outstanding job at libero,” Lammers said.
Up front, Kari Sandage recorded 3 blocks while Larissa Held, Jordan Franken and Wernimont all added one.
The Trojanns will return to action Tuesday at home against Red Oak in more Hawkeye 10 Conference action.
