CPC approves $1,000 for +5 program

ATLANTIC - The Atlantic Community Promotion Commission (CPC) approved $1,000 in funding for the +5 program during its meeting on Thursday.

Last month, the group tabled the request, after Atlantic Chamber Director Ann McCurdy asked for $2,000 from the CPC to help with advertising for the program, which encourages people to shift 5 percent of their income back into local businesses. She said the advertising would focus more during the period prior to November and December. She also said advertising would remind residents throughout the county that "the whole county benefits when you shop in the county."

McCurdy also referred to an example of an advertisement officials would like to use as part of the program, which includes a list of good and services available in the area. For example, someone who may want or need acupuncture could find it in Atlantic. She also said if a person needs a certain item or service in Atlantic, they can always call her at the chamber, and she can try to track it down for them.

Last month, Cass/Atlantic Development Corporation (CADCO) Executive Director Russell Joyce said he got a lot of comments about the program, including how it made people "stop and think" about shopping in town, and how it give them a "little reminder" to do so.

McCurdy said Thursday she was surprised the group was discussing the funding request again because she thought it had "died" as a topic the CPC would consider. Since it hadn't though, McCurdy said she hoped the commission would consider the funding, in part because while funds could be used from the Atlantic Chamber for the program, those funds "focus more on chamber members," while CPC funds would focus everyone.

CPC Member Matt Mullenix said because of the current economy, more people were shopping local, which could be seen in the group's local option sales tax report, and he thought the CPC could help support the +5 program. He suggested offering $1,000 instead of $2,000, and the CPC approved the $1,000 figure.

In related news, the CPC tabled choosing a chairman and vice chairman for the group as not all members were able to attend Thursday's meeting.
