CCMH Receives Neighborhood Network Grant
ATLANTIC-The Cass County Memorial Hospital Parents-As-Teachers program received a $5,000 Neighborhood Network Grant recently. The grant was provided by Boost4Families, and was to be used for materials and supplies to support families. Parents-As-Teachers used the funds to provide books and carseats to families in Cass County.
“The importance of reading to children simply cannot be overemphasized,” explained Nancy Gibson, CCMH Family Enrichment Coordinator. “Providing age appropriate children’s books, as well as parenting books, to our clients is one of the best ways we can accomplish our goal of enriching home environments to best prepare children for school learning.”
Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a home-based parent education program whose purpose is to improve childrens school readiness. The service is available, free of charge, to any family with children from birth to kindergarten entry. Children who experience success in school are most often positively-contributing members of society as adults. Because parents are a childs first teacher, and because a significant amount of brain development occurs during a childs first few years, it is crucial that parents are competent in child development and appropriate ways to stimulate learning.
Families in the PAT program are visited monthly by a parent educator who provides child development education and models appropriate parent-child interaction. Other components of the program include developmental screenings, book loans from the PAT library, and group meetings. Cass County Memorial Hospital began the PAT program in 2000, and it has since expanded to include two parent educators. For more information about the PAT program, contact Nancy at CCMH Home Care/Hospice, 712-243-8006 or 800-994-4345.
