Kopecky Nursing scholarship awards to seven alumni
The tenth annual Cecile E. Kopecky Nursing Scholarship has been awarded, with six alumni and one recent graduate of the Atlantic Community High School to be receiving monies to further their nursing education.
Recipients
The recipients are: Jocelyn Knop Dumstorff, alumni 1996, continuing in the Master’s Program Nurse Anesthesia, Mount Marty College, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Kelsi Sharp, Alumni 2005, currently in the bachelor of science nursing degree, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb.; Katie Smith, alumni 2005, continuing in the Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree program, Nebraska Methodist College program, Omaha; Chelsea Swanson, Alumni 2006, presently in the Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree, Morningside College, Sioux City; Laci Swanson, Alumni 2007, accepted into the Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree, Morningside College, Soux City; Kristyna Thysen, Alumni 2006, currently studying for her Associate degree in Nursing, Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs; and 2008 graduate from the Atlantic High School, Felicia Zellmer, accepted into the Practical Nursing program, Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs.
Scholarship
The Ceceile E. Kopecky Nursing Scholarship was established in 1999. Kopecky, an Atlantic resident, graduated from the Atlantic High School, then went on to the University of Iowa for her nursing degree. She spent most of her nursing career in the Navy. When Kopecky died in 1998, she bequeathed a portion of her estate to the Atlantic Community School Foundation. She designated monies to be used for purposes of promoting nursing education. The Atlantic Community School Foundation has established an endowment fund to provide nursing scholarships in memory of Cecile Kopecky. To date, there have been 58 offered and these recipients have benefited financially from her generosity and foresight.
Annual event
This scholarship is offered annually each spring to persons interested in pursuing a nursing career to further their nursing education. To be eligible for the Cecile E. Kopecky Scholarship, one must have either graduated from the Atlantic High School or currently employed in Atlantic and having been accepted into a specific nursing program. Applications and renewal for this scholarship may be obtained from the Atlantic High School guidance office or online at www.atlantic.k12.ia.us. As a reminder, transcripts and letters of reference must accompany the application. Scholarship application deadline is in April.
