Optimist Club
Griswold Optimist Club met Friday, June 27 with 22 members and three guests present for the breakfast meeting. The meeting was conducted by Ray Wilson, with Joe Rush giving the invocation.
President Ray Wilson presented membership lapel pins to Errol and Lola Perdue for bringing in Gail and Dallas Maxwell as new members.
Bruce and Nancy Potter were in charge of the program. Their guest speaker, Kayleen Amos, told about the Southwest Iowa Touring Honor Choir, which went to the “Big Apple,” New York City June 5-9. Seven members selected from Griswold were Kayleen Amos, Stephanie Steinbeck, Macy Whiley, James Young, Morgan Humbert, Colin Weaver and Chase Wallace. There were 10 chaperones accompanied the group. They wore different colored T-shirts, green and pink, yellow and blue, to help identify them while touring. Kayleen gave a slide presentation and took over 200 pictures. Kayleen enjoyed visiting the cathedrals and took many pictures of them. They also visited Grant’s Tomb, Carnegie Hall, John Lennon’s Memorial, Time Square, the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero. The choir performed concerts at St. John’s Cathedral, the United Nations and at a Catholic Church Mass. One day they sang on a ferry. They also attended the musical, “Mamma Mia” and one night they ate at Little Italy.
Joy Smith and Joe Sponsler grilled the hot dogs Friday noon for the Pottawattamie County Talented and Gifted program and guests held at Carson.
Sunday night several members participated in the walk for Relay of Life in Atlantic. Phyllis Sponsler was chairman of the event.
There will be no Optimist meeting on July 4, but members will meet at 7:30 a.m. to put the flags out at the cemeteries.
T. J. Dunphy will have the program on July 11, and Lola Perdue will receive the free breakfast.
Rebekah Lodge
Griswold Rebekah Lodge met June 3 with eight members present. Noble Grand Virginia Borkowski presided. The secretary read an invitation from the Red Oak Lodge for a potluck luncheon on June 17, at 11:30 a.m. Vi McCullough turned in her recipe for Assembly President Gwen Wixoms’ cookbook. Following a short business meeting a cooperative lunch was served.
Eight members were present for the June 18 meeting held at the Legion Hall, with Virginia Borkowski presiding. A letter was read about electing a representative for the Rebekah Assembly in the fall. This was tabled until the next meeting. Donations were made to Visual Eye, Arthritis Fund, Education Fund and Rose Bowl Float Fund. The Noble Grand appointed Lucille Damgaard and Myrna Carley to audit books. Five members reported to have attended the Red Oak Lodge visitation day on June 17 held at the Hysham House.
Past Noble Grand Club
Six members of the Past Noble Grand Club went on an outing on June 25. Noon lunch was at Darrell’s Place in Hamlin. They just had to try out those special tenderloins that they had heard so much about. The fresh strawberry pie was delicious, too. The next stop was at the Heritage Rose Garden at Gray. They even had three beautiful barn board quilts displayed on a board fence. The last stop was south of Audubon at the Nathaniel Hamlin Museum, where they enjoyed seeing a live elk family grazing in the pasture. Other barn board quilts were observed as they traveled through the Lewis area.
Baby Shower
Melisa and Barb Baier hosted a “Get-Acquainted” baby shower in honor of Thor, 3 and 1/2 month old son of Jennifer and David Holst of Des Moines, held Sunday afternoon, June 22, at the Deere Shop in Lyman. In lieu of gifts for Thor, the guests were asked to bring items for the UMCOR layette kits for other babies.
Katherine Lendke of Virginia Beach, Va. has been visiting her mother, Esther Frazier of Griswold and her sister, Judy Guttau and family of Treynor.
On Sunday, June 22, Mick and Judy Guttau of Treynor, Katherine Landke of Virginia Beach, Va. and Esther Frazier of Griswold attended a gathering at the Senior Haven in Cumberland in honor of Mike and the late LaVetta Pettinger family from Vinton, West Branch and Coralville. Others attending were the families of Alberta Erickson, Larie Erickson and H.B. Edwards.
