ATLANTIC - The Atlantic Farmers Market will be starting up again Saturday, June 7, and will run through Oct. 28, and new vendors are always welcome.
Those driving past the market’s “new” location along Seventh Street, just south of Orschelns, might have noticed the big “Atlantic Farmers Market” sign was gone.
Organizers Kathee McCrory and Donna Brahms say the sign was taken down to be updated, showing the 2008 hours and dates.
Unfortunately, McCrory said, when it was time to put it back up, it was wrong, listing the market as open on the wrong days. It was taken down to be reworked one more time, and should be going up any time again, she said.
The Farmers Market runs on Tuesdays 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays 9-11 a.m. at the “new” location on the south side of Orschelns parking lot, along Seventh Street. It offers locally grown produce and some baked goods and crafts.
This early, vendors might be offering things like radishes and rhubarb, and possibly some spinach, lettuce.
And shoppers will be able to bring their credit cards to the market, just like recently run commercials advertise: Brahms said she will be able to accept credit cards at her booth. She will be at the market Saturdays, and Tuesday evenings in October.
McCrory and Brahms said they held a meeting earlier this spring to organize possible vendors.
“We had a good turn out,” McCrory said.
Brahms said while she didn’t know for sure how many vendors would sign up, “We should be getting some new people,” she said.
She said the market was always looking for new vendors, and noted that there was a $25 charge to join the Atlantic Farmers Market Association, and $10 for the season to have a booth there, for a total of $35 per season. For those interested in having a booth one or two times during the season, Brahms said a $20 per day fee could be paid instead of joining for the season. For more information contact Donna Brahms at (712) 774-5878 or Kathee McCrory at (712) 249-2758.
McCrory said she’d also spoken with some “new people,” but was beginning to worry that the high price of gasoline might be a deterrent to vendors living out of town.
“Will they want to come out, (to the sale?)” she said. On the other hand, most of the shoppers at the market were from in town, so she thought that would be a plus.
And both say the new location is a big plus.
While the market had been held at the fairgrounds, and later at a parking lot at Sixth and Walnut streets, the new Orschlens parking lot spot is working out well, McCrory said, adding that Orschlens officials were also happy with it.
Also, Southwest 8 Senior Services will hand out Farmers’ Market vouchers for senior citizens in Atlantic in mid-June.
Eligible seniors will be able to pick up coupon books on Wednesday, June 18, at 1 p.m. at the Atlantic Senior Center, 411 Walnut Street.
With these coupons - vouchers worth $28 - eligible seniors can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at their local Farmers Market.
Applications for the vouchers are available at the Atlantic Senior Center. Seniors should pick up an application, and must fill it out and return it on June 18 in order to receive a voucher booklet. Questions about the senior voucher program or the vouchers should be directed to the center directly at: 712-243-3599.
