Sheriff's office given the okay to begin search for new deputy

ATLANTIC - The Cass County Supervisors gave the Sheriff's office the okay to begin a search for a new deputy who would be needed for law enforcement coverage for Griswold.

Cass County Sheriff Bill Sage, Chief Deputy Brian Rink and Griswold Mayor Jerry Putnam were on hand at Wednesday's Cass County Supervisor meeting to talk about contract law enforcement. On Monday, the Griswold City Council unanimously agreed to go forward with a contract for county coverage.

The four-year contract would cost Griswold $55,000 a year for the deputy's salary and require the city to provide a vehicle.

Putnam said Griswold officials were in the process of obtaining a new vehicle, and Rink said if some additional equipment was needed for the car, "forfeit" funds could possibly be used to cover that expense.

Sage said Cass County Attorney Dan Feistner drew up the contract, and he told the supervisors he wanted them, and Griswold officials to take some time and look over the contract and see if any adjustments needed to be made.

"This is just a tentative contract," he said, "And I want some input from everyone on it."

He said another deputy would have to be hired. "It wouldn't be fair to Griswold if we didn't hire another deputy," he said.

Putnam agreed, saying Griswold officials would not agree to the contract if another officer was not hired.

Griswold officials also wanted monthly written reports of law enforcement activity and meetings with the deputy to coordinate law enforcement needs for different events. Sage said those things could easily be set up.

The contract will be effective July 1, and Sage said Griswold officials would not be charged for coverage between now and then. "We felt it was only fair, since we had offered them the contract, to not charge them while we were in negotiation," he said.

Rink asked the supervisors for permission to get started with a search for a new officer, since the process could take months, and they wanted to have someone hired by July 1.

Putnam said there was plenty of support for the contract in Griswold.

"The (unanimous) vote was pretty positive," he said, adding that public comments were also all positive.

"I never heard any negative comments," Supervisor Chuck Rieken said, recommending that the board let the sheriff's office move forward with plans. "It could be a lengthy process," he said.

Sage said the new deputy would not be hired until the contract was completed.

The supervisors also discussed whether or not the $55,000 amount would be enough to cover the cost of adding another deputy.

Sage said the total cost for a new deputy was "probably closer to $59,000," but said that he thought the county could absorb some of that cost, as having the additional deputy would be beneficial to the county.

He said the officer could also cover things that happened in the county around Griswold, noting the deputy would cover an area "west of Hwy, 71, south of Atlantic and into the Griswold area," including the city of Griswold.
