My CSA Experience

If you're not sure what CSA stands for, it's Community Supported Agriculture, and my experience with it was sort of spontaneous.

I'd heard of a CSA before, but I didn't that's what it was called at first. My parents used to be involved with one at the garden at the Henry A. Wallace Birthplace, located between Greenfield and Creston.

For so many months during the year, my parents would pick up boxes of produce from that garden, after they signed up for it, and paid the cost. You'd get produce that was in season from the garden in the boxes.

During one of the many meetings I attended in my job, LaVon Eblen said officials at Harrisdale Homestead were interested in setting up a similar CSA. It was several months after that, that I received a phone call from LaVon asking if I was interested in signing up for their CSA.

I asked a couple of questions, and thought I should consider this for a couple of days, but minutes later, I just said, "put me down as a yes!"

From June to the first week in October, I ran out to the farm of Denise O'Brien and Larry Harris to pick up a box of produce each week. I was always a little excited because you never knew what was going to be in the box.

Along with the produce, there was always a newsletter, which included a column about life in the garden, day to day, recipes and history or other information about the produce everyone was receiving. It was interesting and enjoyable reading.

I bring this topic up only because the Harrisdale Homestead people are at it again, planning another year of CSA, and they are looking for more people interested in being a part of it. They are holding a meeting Monday, Feb. 11 at Iowa Western Community College at 7 p.m.

People do not have to sign up that evening. They can also just come and learn more about the CSA.

My CSA experience was enjoyable, and others who participated like me are also invited to the upcoming meeting to talk about their CSA experience. I won't be able to be there, so this is my plug - If you're a big fan of gardening or even just eating fresh out of the garden produce, you're probably perfect for this. Check it out.
