ATLANTIC - Atlantic area residents are being challenged to take a 100-day challenge to learn how to "Lighten Up" by making better choices.
Atlantic will be participating in the Lighten Up Iowa (LUI) program, according to Ann McCurdy, Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
McCurdy said the Atlantic chamber is working on some "great incentives" to get area residents involved.
"We're working on partnerships with the Atlantic Community Schools, the Nishna Valley Family YMCA, as well as Cass County Health System," she said, adding, "Atlantic residents will be able to join the program through 'Lighten Up Atlantic,' and we'll have a special user registration so that we can track Atlantic's progress as a whole."
The program is a 100-day challenge encouraging individuals to become more active and make healthy food choices.
The program has teams of two to 10 people participating, recording minutes of accumulated activity, weight lost, or both.
"You lead a busy life. You have endless responsibilities and may not feel like you have time for a healthy lifestyle. That's why Lighten Up Iowa will work for you. You don't have to change all at once or try to 'fit' more in. Your lifestyle is a series of choices. Simply by changing the choices you already make every day, you can change your life," LUI organizers said in a press release about the event. "Now is the time to join family, friends and co-workers from all over Iowa and shed unwanted pounds, become more active and make positive long-term changes in daily health habits."
The program begins Jan. 16 and ends April 24. And those participating will get support and ideas through weekly e-mails with tips and hints on how to choose healthier foods and become more physically active. The overall goal is to help Iowans incorporate health into everyday life, according to the release.
Participants will receive a T-shirt, an access card that will allow them to free or reduced memberships at certain health clubs across the state, and the opportunity to win monthly incentives.
"As a paid registrant, you can sign up for the subscription of your choice (six magazine choices) upon logging onto your personal dashboard," organizers said.
The cost to register is $15 per participant and $10 shipping and handling per team. Hy-Vee, Coca-Cola and the Iowa Sports Foundation offer a $5 off the registration fee through a promotional code that will be available at the Live Healthy America kiosks in all Hy-Vee stores mid-January. Online registration is taking place now at www.lightenupiowa.org. Those registering from Atlantic should use the group code LUIATLANTIC.
And while Atlantic area residents can register now online now, McCurdy said "We encourage everyone to register in early January, when Hy-Vee stores will offer a special coupon for $5 off the registration fee of $15. Participants will also receive a free t-shirt, a free magazine subscription, and a special "Lighten Up Atlantic" water bottle.
Lighten Up Iowa is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Sports Foundation and Iowa State University Extension.
