Parkers’ Hoe-down held at Allen House
Allen House on Thursday night was the scene of the Parkers’ Hoe-down, featuring Jim and Linda Parker of Grant. A delightful program of music and comedy was presented for the enjoyment of the residents and guests.
Among the selections were: “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue,” “God Bless the USA,” “It’s A Grand Old Flag,” “Sioux City Sue,” “My Daddy’s Hands,” “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands,” “The Auctioneer’s Song,” Sentimental Journey,” and “The Best Is Yet To Come.”
Jim and Linda, who have been married 38 years, brought chuckles and smiles to the audience, with their family-style jokes. Linda, a cosmologist, works two days a week in the Allen House Beauty Shop, and three days a week for Weight Watchers, Inc. Jim farms and has his own construction business and is a Montgomery County Supervisor.
Entertaining Couple
The couple met in Council Bluffs, where Linda was attending beauty school and Jim was a student at Iowa Western and enjoyed playing his guitar. She has been singing publicly since a child, especially during her high school years, and suggested the two of them perform at social events. Jim said no to any public appearances, but later thought “maybe” hiding behind a costume would be all right.
The Parkers have been taking their music and humor around southwestern Iowa for 37 years, along with their children, playing at retirement homes, Walnut Grove events, churches, social events, clubs, anniversaries, weddings, etc.
They have two children: a son, Mathew, 29, of Hopkins, Mo., who is married and has two little girls, two and 4-years-old; a daughter, Melody,18, who lives in California, where she is going to California Pacific College of Performing Art. She will be a part of the “Young Americans” group which travels around the United States and European countries.
