ATLANTIC - Atlantic School officials, along with family members and friends, gathered in front of the Atlantic Middle School on Friday for a tree planting in memory of former Atlantic School District Board Secretary and Business Manager Barb Nelson. Nelson passed away last April.
The tree was donated by Glenn and Marie Binfield of Atlantic. Nelson originally worked for Glenn as a secretary when he held the job she eventually took over. Atlantic Superintendent Dr. Wendy Prigge said the site where the tree was planted - in front of the middle school near 11th Street - was nice because her co-workers can look out the window of their office and see the tree.
Nelson, who died April 17, was born June 2, 1943, in Atlantic, the daughter of Boyd K. and Leta Anna (Neuman) Phillips. She attended Lewis Community School and graduated from Walnut Community School. She received her Associates degree from Iowa Western Community College and her BA in Business Administration from Bellevue University.
She married Dennis R. Nelson, June 29, 2002, after an 18-year courtship. The couple spent much of their time with family and friends in Iowa, Connecticut, and California. Barbara was a very hard worker and committed professional, a member of the Big Bucks Bridge Club and participated in several civic activities.
Barbara served a 24-year tenure at the Atlantic School District where she held several progressively senior positions and recently retired from the position of School Business Manager and Board Secretary.
