Members of the Atlantic School Board toured a few sites prior to their board meeting Monday night including the wellness/weight room at the high school.

Atlantic Coach Gaylord Schelling showed the board members the wellness/weight room including some of the new weight equipment, and the stereo system purchased from Jerry’s TV. Schelling said televisions still need to be added, and many of those will come from the school since many of the mod classroom equipment have been installed.

A mod classroom has a projector attached to the ceiling, and has additional equipment connected to it to allow computer images, television images and video images to be projected on a screen in front of a classroom. Television and video images are turned on by a remote, and computer images can be manipulated by a wireless computer keyboard and mouse. Because of the mod classrooms, Schelling said, the school had a lot of televisions they didn’t use anymore, and some of those could be used in the weight room. He also pointed out a black strip on the wall in one room, saying motivational sayings would be painted there at a later time.

Schelling said expanding the room took “a lot of time and effort” from a lot of people, but “kids love it and coaches love it.” He was also trying to work out details so school staff members could also use the weight room if they wanted to. He told the board members he “appreciated their support” in getting the expansion done.

Members approved the expansion of the wellness/weight in April. In March, Schelling gave the Atlantic School Board a list of items and prices for a “dream weight room,” which would have an estimated cost of $64,000. Previously, Schelling and Activity Director Bob Sweeney gave a presentation asking for a possible expansion of the wellness/weight room, and the board approved hiring an architectural firm to check the soundness of the room structure and plan for possible expansion.

While Schelling said his “dream weight room,” would include items like dumbbell benches, Olympic bars, treadmills, elipictcals, exercise bikes, televisions mounted on the wall, stereo system and speakers, and freight and installation costs of the items.

Previously, Sweeney gave the board a cost of the project, which was $68,000, along with a list of where funds could come for the project, including an anonymous donor fund, and the Atlantic Booster Club. Sweeney said the anonymous donor fund has approximately $150,000 in it with $25,000 earmarked for girls’ athletics and $25,000 boys’ athletics, and he estimated that maybe only $7,000 has been used from the fund.

Sweeney recommended using $26,000 from the Anonymous Donation Fund, asking members of the booster club to donate $36,000, and asking the board to approve $6,000 to the project. Schelling said the current wellness/weight room holds approximately 24 individuals, although at times he has had classes with 28 students in the room.

Board members also looked at some appliances, including a dishwasher, and counter space in the Washington Elementary Special Education Classroom, and gym floors at Schuler Elementary and the Middle School.
