An old sign at Cedar Park in Atlantic got a facelift this year. Cedar Park, located south of Second Street on Cedar, will celebrate its anniversary this week, on July 19.

Once the location of Grant School, an old sign put up at the park’s dedication in 1976 needed some updating and repair. John Fleming, (right) a member of the Atlantic Lions Club came up with an idea that would tell visitors to the park about the school that had once stood there. He decided to incorporate a new granite sign, with a line art sketch of the school and some information about it, with the facelift for the old sign. With the help of Jim Zellmer (left), the old Cedar Park sign was taken down and fixed up, and the 9 x 12 inch granite plaque was added. “It was like an episode from this old house,” Fleming said, “Jim knew what to do, and proceeded to do it.” The new sign went up earlier this summer, and Zellmer and Fleming are pictured, looking at some details about Grant School.

The school was located at the site from 1890 until 1974, and after it was torn down, Cedar Park was created. The 9 by 12 inch granite plaque was donated by Atlantic Memorial, and was carved by Larry Tiarks, of Tiarks Custom Engraving in Avoca. Fleming made prints from the plaque, and has been selling them to individuals who attended or remembered the school. He said he had sold all of the original 110 copies he made, but can make more if needed. He can be reached at 243-2742 for those who would like a copy. Funds raised go to the Atlantic Lions to help them maintain area parks like Cedar Park and for other community projects.

" Boy do I ever remember Grant School. When I was a little kid in Atlantic, back in the 1950's, we used to play around that school. That was one of our meeting places. Does anyone remember Turner's Grocery? It wasn't far from the school grounds. "
