A bit of the wild west will be rolling into Adair next weekend as the annual Jesse James Chuck Wagon Celebration gets underway, Friday, Saturday July 20-21 in Adair.
The theme for Saturday's parade is "Get on Board," and the public is invited to put a float together.
Sponsored by the Adair Chamber of Commerce, the event commemorates the day the James gang robbed the Rock Island Train, July 21, 1873, near Adair, reported to be the world's first robbery of a moving train.
Other activities planned for the weekend include sidewalk sales, a baby crawl, a Texas Hold 'Em competition, parades, the annual Chuck Wagon dinner, and a Little Miss Adair and Little Mister Gunfighter contest.
Plans for this year's celebration are underway, organizers said, and the Adair Chamber of Commerce is inviting area musicians to step up for a "jam session" during the annual Saturday evening dinner, which will be held starting at 5 p.m. in the city park.
Organizers say many groups have provided entertainment during the dinner through the years including the Adair Community Choir, the Better Keep Our Day Jobs Players, and the Boys and Girls Club, to name a few. "I thought this might be a more relaxed way to share an evening," says 2007 Chamber President, Brenda Wedemeyer.
"As a choir director, I can tell you that there's an awful lot of work that goes into prepping for a concert - even in a casual setting," she said. "It's quite often more fun to just get a group of musicians together and just let the music go."
This year the dinner will be returning to the park from the Community Centre. "It's been nice to be able to use the Community Centre, but what fun is a picnic without the bugs and heat?" Wedemeyer asked.
She said the event would be a "BYOBS" event: while chairs would be provided for seating during the dinner, attendees are encouraged to bring their own bug spray. The traditional Chuck Wagon Dinner is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 21 in the City Park, with the jam session to start at 6 p.m. For further info or to tell Wedemeyer know you would like to participate in the jam session, leave a message for her at 641-742-5566 or via email at brendawedemeyer@yahoo.com.
Wedemeyer is also looking for anyone interested in selling farm produce, baked goods, or craft items during the annual Chuck Wagon celebration this year. Vendors are invited to set up in the City Park Friday and or Saturday, July 20-21, by 8 a.m. To reserve a spot free of charge, please contact Wedemeyer.
