There’s a new store opening in Atlantic in mid-August, with a familiar name: Sears.
Kyle Lensch of Atlantic is the owner of the new Sears authorized dealer retail store that will be located across the street from Hy-Vee in Atlantic at 1607 East Seventh Street.
He said about 50 percent of the store will consist of large and small appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators, vacuums and microwaves, and said Sears will be sending him two whole semi-loads of appliances.
Lensch said he decided to open the store because he wanted to do something that would draw people to Atlantic, “I wanted to do something that would bring people to Atlantic to shop.”
He said he noticed that people were traveling out of Atlantic to shop for some items. “So many people drive out of town,” he said, adding he hoped the store would “curb some of that out of town spending.”
He also said he had gotten a lot of feedback from area residents who knew he used to work at the previous Sears store in Atlantic, and “told me how much they missed it and wanted it back.”
“I couldn’t have done this without the support of the community,” he said, noting that community support had been very strong. “They pulled some strings, and helped me out,” he said. “It’s been a real blessing.”
The store will also carry lawn and garden items, with about 25 percent of the store consisting of “lawn and garden (items), from garden tractors to chain saws,” he said, including lawn mowers, tillers and snowblowers.
The store will also carry Craftsman tools, power and hand tools, exercise equipment and an option to help area residents get things the store doesn’t carry: an on-line selling station.
Through www.sears.com, customers can use the selling station to find items the local store doesn’t carry, and can order those items to be delivered to the store, saving them the shipping costs.
Lensch said customers could find “even items in lines I don’t carry,” or could shop at home, and then order through the selling station to avoid paying shipping costs for bigger items.
Weekly deliveries will mean items ordered arrive in a timely manner, he said.
Local delivery will also be available. “There’s a lot more than meets the eye,” available through the store, he said.
Lensch said there were a couple benefits to being an authorized Sears retailer.
“There’s the national benefit,” he said, “of nation wide pricing and wide variety of products.”
The store will also participate in all sales like the full-line retailers, for things like 0 percent interest, and printed fliers. “Those things are all going to apply here, also,” he said.
With Lensch’s Sears store, that national benefit is balanced by the benefits of local ownership, he said, “You have a local owner for customer service,” he said.
Area residents will be able to bring questions, and items for repair, right to the store, Lensch said. “We will offer service,” he said, for just about everything.
He said Sears service was available for any item sold, as well as items purchased at other stores. “If you buy it from Sears, Sears will service it, and from anywhere else, as well.”
He said the new Sears store was scheduled to open “in mid-August,” with a grand opening planned for “a couple weeks later.”
He said about three full semi-loads of merchandise and fixtures will be coming in before that, starting to arrive Aug. 1.
He said the business would employ three to four employees, and noted he is still hiring for the store.
The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon until 5 p.m. on Sundays. The store will be open seven days a week, he said.
So far he said he’s been working on the building since May but really got into gear in June, replacing flooring, adding and removing some walls and an office, painting and repairing some old lighting, and added a new heating and cooling system.
