Stroke detection screenings offered next Friday

A special screening session to be offered in Atlantic next week is intended to help area residents prevent possible future health issues and discover hidden risks.

Stroke Detection Plus, a company that provides screenings for stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and osteoporosis, will be in Atlantic at the Cass County Courthouse at 5 West Seventh Street, on Friday, July 6, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Screenings will be available by appointment, and area residents may call 1-877-732-8258 to schedule an appointment.

The purpose of the screenings is to alert people of a health risk that might go undetected. Those being tested will be informed of the need for follow up with their physician. A board-licensed physician reviews all screenings, and results are mailed to participants within 10 business days.

The four screenings are available. They cost $35 each. The stroke screening visualizes the building of fatty blockage in the carotid arteries. The abdominal aortic aneurysm screening looks for the existence of an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta, which could rupture, something that could be fatal. The peripheral arterial disease screening looks for blockages in the legs, which could indicate increased risk for coronary artery disease and peripheral arterial disease. The osteoporosis test screens for abnormal bone density, for both men and women.

A reduced price is available for three or more screenings. Any three screenings are $95, and a full wellness profile, including all four screenings, is just $115.

Cash and check are accepted at the screening site, and major credit cards can be accepted over the phone before the screening.

Atlantic resident Darleen Euken had a screening done with Stroke Detection Plus, and had this to say about the program.

“The tech sent me directly to my doctor, and after seeing a cardiovascular surgeon, they confirmed (Stroke Detection Plus’) results that my carotid artery was 70 percent blocked. We would all rather have anything than a deadly or disabling stroke. I would highly recommend (their) service to everyone,” Euken said.

Some stroke statistics to consider include:

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability and nursing home admissions; Last year there were 750,000 stroke victims, nationally; The majority of these victims had no prior warning, and 75-85 percent of those strokes could have been avoided; Of the US adult population, 97 percent could not name a warning sign;

Risk factors for stroke and vascular disease include being over the age of 40; having a family history of strokes; having a family history of heart disease; being more than 20 pounds overweight; having high cholesterol; being a Diabetic; Smoking; having high blood pressure or being inactive. Those having two or more of the risk factors should consider being tested, organizers said.

Heidi Snider from Stroke Detection Plus said, “We all know and see people everyday with these conditions. Most have no idea that they are at risk.”

Organizers of the screenings explain that doctors can’t order these tests without the patient showing signs or symptoms, as they are too expensive in the hospital setting.

The screenings “essentially take the handcuffs off the doctors, by showing evidence of disease at the screening level. This allows doctors to implement treatment options before serious disability or death occurs,” organizers said.

Stroke Detection Plus offers the mobile ultrasound screenings in a comfortable, painless setting, and at an inexpensive price.
