It’s time for area kids - and adults - to “Get a Clue” at the library this summer.

The Atlantic Public Library’s summer reading and activities program this year is called “Get a Clue @ the Library” and includes a summer read at home program for kids ages 3 to third grade, and for kids in fourth through eighth grade. It also includes a variety of at the library activities and this year, an adult reading and activity program as well.

Carole Stanger, library director, said this year the summer reading program wasn’t just for kids.

“We had some adults who wanted to be included,” she said, so an adult summer reading and activity program was set up for this year.

Stanger said winter reading programs for adults had been tried before, but this was the first year for the adult summer program. Set up a little differently than the kid’s program, adults can pick up a sheet explaining the program and will have nine activities to do. Some of the activities include things like reading a mystery, participating in a summer library activity with a child, and reading a book by an author whose books they’ve never read before. Adults have to complete eight of the nine activities to win a special prize, a pen, Stanger said.

The adult program will run for the same dates as the kids’ program, starting June 1.

Children’s Librarian Julie Tjepkes said this year sign ups are only needed for some activities, like a “Reading Road Trip” program coming up in June, but parents and kids can pick up information sheets and reading logs at the library.

Activities will include Preschool Storytimes, June 4, 18, and 25 from 10-10:45 a.m. for kids ages 3-4. Storytimes for kids 5 year olds and kindergarten students will be June 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 10-11 a.m. No sign up is necessary for Storytimes.

“Dan’s Reading Road Trip,” with Dan Wardell, host of the IPTV Kids Clubhouse, will be held on June 11 at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. for kids 3-11. Families are encouraged to attend and sign ups are requested so planners know how many will be attending.

The following programs are for kids who will be in first through third grade in the fall, and sign up is not necessary.

On June 5 and 26 “Get A Clue” Activity Stations will be set up from 10-11:30 a.m. featuring five 20 minute activity stations.

June 7 will be a “Detect It” program for first-third graders, where kids can talk to a real detective and learn about the job through the ICN room. It will run from 10:15-11 a.m.

On “Solve It” will be held on June 14, where kids learn about optical illusions, clues, riddles and rhymes. It will also be an ICN program, from 10:15-11 a.m.

Kids will get to “Dig it Up,” on June 21, through an ICN program that lets kids meet an archaeologist who studies artifacts found in Iowa, from 10:15-11 a.m.

On June 28 kids will get to “Discover It” via the ICN with a naturalist from the Polk County Conservation Board, learning about mysteries on the planet Earth. This program will also be from 10:15-11 a.m.

“Find It” will be held on July 5, where kids learn about animals with help from the Blank Park Zoo via ICN from 10:15-11 a.m.

A special tutoring program will be available for kids in first through third grades with help from the Atlantic Does. This activity does require sign up, and parents can sign up their child to participate at no charge. Parents can sign up kids for one, some or all available dates, depending on their schedules. Dates will be June 7, 14, 21, and 28, July 5, 12, 19 and 26, and tutoring will be held from 11 a.m. to noon.

Movie Days will be offered in the library meeting room through the summer, offering age appropriate movies. For kids in kindergarten through third grade movies will be offered from 9:30-11:30 a.m. including “Pagemaster,” on June 22, and “Abominable Snowman, Choose Your Own Adventure,” on July 6. For kids in fourth through seventh grade, movies include “Quest for the Spear,” on June 15, “Return to King Solomon’s Mines” on June 29, and “The Railway Children,” on July 13.

Two special “You Never Know @ the Library” programs for kids in fourth through seventh grade will be held on June 19 and July 18. The June program is “It’s A Surprise!” and in July the Tween Board has planned a Harry Potter Party.

A Lunch Bunch program for kids in first through third or fourth through seventh grade will be held, offering a chance for kids to listen to an ongoing book, bring their own lunch and relax in the library’s air conditioning. For first through third grade, sessions will be July 3, 10 and 17 from 11 a.m. to noon, and for fourth through seventh grade, the program will be July 2, 9 and 16.

Preschool Camp, sponsored by the Cass County Conservation Board and the Atlantic Public Library will be held in July for 4-5 year olds, and sign up is from 5-7 p.m. at the Atlantic Public Library on June 20.

The At Home Reading Program “You Never Know @ the Library” runs June 1 - Aug. 10, for preschool (age 3) through third grades, or in fourth through eighth grades.

Rules sheets are available at the library and kids can read at their own pace - or have someone read to them, for the younger set, and earn prizes or chances to be involved in a drawing. For more information about any children’s or adult summer library activities, call the library at 243-5466.
