Most elite high hurdlers strive for a time under 15 seconds. On Thursday night at the Monarch Relays in Denison, Atlantic sophomore Jordan Mullen almost cracked into the 13s.

Mullen burned to a time of 14.05—obviously a career best—and with it broke a 13-year-old record in the 110-meter high hurdles for Western Iowa set by Jason Woods of Treynor back in 1994.

The record books, complied by the Omaha World Herald, has Woods’ record standing at 14.10. Mullen’s time of 14.05 not only broke that with a somewhat significant margin for error, it also places the Drake Relays qualifier as the man to beat heading into next weekend’s districts.

As far as the team standings went, chalk up another first place finish for Atlantic who has won their fourth straight meet and sixth on the season. Just once, the Trojans haven’t been on top after all is tallied up, settling for a second place finish at the Harlan Cyclones Relays on April 10.

Once again, it was Harlan pushing Atlantic, though Thursday’s showing goes down as one of the more convincing performances on the season as the Trojans took first place with 143 points compared to 100 for the runners up Harlan.

St. Albert took a distant third with 74 points, followed by Carroll (53), Lewis Central (53), Kuemper (52), Denison (42) and Woodbine (36).

Atlantic had five first place finishes and six more runners up. In the field events, Kasey Juhl took the discus by a mile with a throw of 151’4", while Paul Kite places second in the high jump (5’10") and Rakeem Hedrington finishes second in the long jump at 19’1".

In the 400 meter dash, Keenan Benn edged out Harlan’s Brandon Carney 52.38 to 53.05 to bounce back from a fourth-place finish at Monday’s Atlantic Coed Invite while Justen Templeman won the 1600 meter run and Josh Morenz was winner in the 400 meter hurdles.

In other second place finishes for Atlantic, the 4x800 meter relay team took second, Alex Denny clocked in at 11:03.48 in the 3200 meter run, Brandon Schuler finished second in the 800 meter run at 2:06.00 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Alex Schelling, Josh Morenz, Russ Fairfield and Keenan Benn closed down the meet with second place time of 3:39.94.
