Deb King inducted into pool hall of fame
Atlantic native Deb King was inducted into the Midwest Pool Players Association Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Lincoln, NE on April 19.
King, 92, was not able to attend the event, and the award was accepted on his behalf by his five children; Denny King, Debbie Leistad, Sue Muri, Margo Chester and Jody McBride.
King has participated in various pool tournaments until he was over 75-year-old and local leagues into his eighties. In 1983, at the age of 69, he won the prestigious Midwest 8-Ball Tournament at Peony Park in Omaha. There were participants from five surrounding states, with a field of 200 men and 100 women. In 1976, at age 62, King placed second in the same tournament. In the first 20 years the tournament was held, King was the only player to qualify for the finals each time.
As a well-known athlete in Western Iowa, King has been active in pool along with golf, bowling, baseball and softball, and has three times bowled three perfect 300 games.
Some other highlights of his career were when his brother Lynn King—who played three seasons in the outfield for the St. Louis Cardinals in the mid-thirties—was inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame for his athleticism at Drake University, and Deb was able to accept the award for him. Another, when he participated and challenged for the lead against the country’s top bowler in Chicago during the United States Match Game Bowling Tournament in the mid 1950s.
As a golfer, King has won state tournaments for the Eagles and Elks events and he shot his age, which included a hole-in-one during a senior golf tournament in Shenandoah when he was 70-years-old.
